The United States launched Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in 2014 to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and to set the conditions for follow-on operations to increase regional stability. The strategy to defeat ISIS includes military operations, as well as support for local security forces, diplomacy, governance, humanitarian assistance, and stabilization programs. This report marks the 23rd quarterly report on OIR and covers the period of July 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020.
This quarter, in support of the COVID-19 response through UNDP, USAID redirected more than $10 million in cost savings to support the creation of isolation rooms, to supply equipment, and to increase bed capacity in nine provincial healthcare facilities across Iraq. USAID reported the cost savings will also be used to rehabilitate the East Mosul Medical Fluid Factory one of two facilities in Iraq that supplies medical fluids.
In Syria, COVID-19 has exacerbated the economic crisis and child hunger. This quarter, USAID reported that the Syrian economy continued to decline. The decline impacted the price of basic food items, the cost of which increased by approximately 240 percent countrywide from June 2019 to June 2020. According to an NGO, in the last 6 months, the total number of children experiencing food-insecurity across the country has risen to more than 4.6 million.
