As a Writer-Editor, you will:

  • Advise OIG staff and managers on the development of a wide variety of written products, including audit reports, testimonies, congressional correspondence, special reports, and brochures. Participate in key meetings with teams, managers, and senior leaders on report focus, message, and progress.
  • Review written products to ensure they comply with writing principles and established policies and procedures, e.g., GAO guidelines, Yellow Book reporting standards, etc. Identify where and why deviations from these standards occur, develops strategies to remove these deviations, and how to appropriately communicate results.
  • Revise documents for logic, clarity, and accuracy. Decipher highly complex and, at times, unclear or conflicting information.
  • Conduct independent research to identify and provide needed context for understanding complex material and audit messages.
  • Edit documents to comply with house style requirements; consults on design, graphics, and other illustrative materials; and complete final review of publications for style, design, layout, and editorial aspects before their release.
  • Assist AS Division managers and the Communications Officer in formulating and promulgating writing policies, procedures, and guidelines, and in developing products that support all OIG missions, including OIG’s semiannual reports to Congress, top management challenges, transition reports, budget reports, journal articles, speeches and presentations, and internal products such as OIG’s newsletter.
  • Provide guidance and support in developing visuals for audit reports, testimonies, presentations, and other OIG products, including charts, tables, and photographs.
  • Maintain a basic knowledge of and concerns related to USAID programs and operations.
  • Conduct formal and on-the job-training for OIG staff in message development, writing, and visual presentation of complex data.
  • Effectively work with and influences a highly diverse staff, often under extreme pressure and timelines to meet mandates and testimony time frames. Anticipate and solves problems, or takes corrective action when problems arise.
  • Maintain expert skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and other software to effectively and efficiently complete required tasks. Use various technologies to enhance collaboration and expedite product development.
