As the Paralegal Specialist (FOIA) for the Office of the Inspector General, you will safeguard the security of information contained in reports which may have impact on national security and/or privacy; decide and make recommendations as to what material may or may not be released; and coordinate the FOIA/PA response process within the OIG.

At the full performance the incumbent will:

  • Receive and evaluate FOIA/PA requests
  • Review, analyze and process Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act requests of a simple and complex nature
  • Respond to administrative appeals of an agency’s FOIA response
  • Research, analyze, and interpret new legislation, regulations, or guidance related to FOIA
  • Assert Glomar responses in response to a FOIA request
  • Assist OLC’s FOIA Attorney Coordinator with FOIA and PA cases and appeals
  • Collaborate with Agency’s FOIA Office regarding joint FOIA requests, Agency documents, joint policies and templates, and statutory reporting
  • Submit predisclosure business notifications to companies regarding trade secret or confidential financial or commercial information pursuant to Exemption 4
  • Review and analyze records to determine FOIA exemptions
  • Provide advice and guidance on FOIA issues
  • Recommend new processes, systems, or procedures related to improving an agency FOIA program
  • Brief, coordinate and engages OLC attorneys on complex requests and legal issues
  • Coordinate with other departments or agencies on FOIA consultations and referrals
  • Discuss the scope of a FOIA request with media requesters
  • Communicate with requesters to clarify the scope of FOIA requests and provide status updates
  • Interacting with other offices to conduct searches for responsive records and obtain information regarding the content of responsive records to assess applicable exemptions
