The USAID Office of Inspector General (OIG) is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP). “This MoU will strengthen USAID OIG’s investigations into diversion, fraud, and other risks to the pharmaceutical supply chain by leveraging technology to improve visibility, oversight, and coordinated action against the misuse or theft of U.S.-funded global health commodities worldwide,” said Sean M. Bottary, Acting Assistant Inspector General for Investigations.
For decades, USAID OIG has been at the forefront of combatting fraud, corruption, and diversion in U.S. global health programs. This includes investigating schemes such as the theft and resale of medical commodities and the sexual exploitation and abuse of beneficiaries, as well as recommending solutions that would strengthen oversight of global health supply chains worldwide.
This innovative MoU enhances coordination between USAID OIG and NABP in protecting the integrity of U.S.-funded global health commodities across U.S. foreign assistance programs. The MoU will allow for the rapid detection of potential diversion, resale, or other corruption that prevents commodities from reaching those in need. With greater visibility into the movement of U.S.-funded global health commodities worldwide, USAID OIG strengthens its existing capabilities to track and trace commodities and pursue decisive enforcement remedies against those who misappropriate them.
With continued oversight jurisdiction over U.S.-funded foreign assistance across multiple federal agencies, USAID OIG will continue to provide expert oversight of global health programs to inform decision-makers and continue to hold accountable those who divert taxpayer-funded aid.
